Show you listen

When you talk to a person who needs emotional support, they usually have a strong need to feel heard. To show them that you listen attentively, use body language and ask follow-up questions.

Body language

You can use your body to show that you listen attentively:

  • Nod occasionally
  • Maintain appropriate eye contact
  • Lean slightly forward in your chair
Without saying a word, these gestures show the other person that you're paying close attention to what they say.

Follow-up questions

Follow-up questions are another way to show that you pay attention to what your colleague says.
